The School Library Service has developed a Reading Challenge - Going for Gold - to support schools subscribing to the SLS with their work on the summer Olympic Games in Rio.
The challenge will develop literacy skills, promote reading for pleasure and support cross-curricular work around the Olympic and Paralympic values. Every subscribing school can request a free pack by emailing sls.events@hants.gov.uk. The core resource pack contains:
- 100 Reading passports - which include information on the Olympic values
- 50 Pentathlon Certificates - to be awarded to students who complete 5 steps of the challenge
- 50 Decathlon Certificates - to be awarded to students who complete 10 steps of the challenge
- 2 posters - to advertise the challenge in school
- Supporting Materials - including a letter and information sheet for parents/carers; book list (including both fiction and non-fiction suggestions which either give background to the Olympics and Olympic sports or illustrate the Olympic values).
Additional packs are available for SLS subscribing schools to buy. These cost £30 per pack of 100 (as above). Class packs with 30 passports, 15 Pentathlon and 15 Decathlon Certificates are available for £10.
For further information or to order your pack, subscribing schools should email sls.events@hants.gov.uk. The Sports and Olympic Games 2016 booklist, a list of award-winning authors, and the parent letter are all available via our Promoting Reading/Go for Gold page.
