The writing competition Right, Write ran for the third time this year. It is designed to support the teaching of creative writing in the secondary classroom by providing a framework with a tangible and worthwhile outcome.

Shravanthie Fernando from Bishop Challoner Catholic Secondary School in Basingstoke and Olivia Wake from Robert May’s School in Odiham were the winners in the first two years. Bishop Challoner School welcomed Andy Briggs and Robert May’s welcomed Julia Golding, each of whom provided a writing workshop for the winning pupil and selected groups of talented fellow authors. An ebook from each year was published with ten of the best stories, all with personal feedback from Judy Waite, children’s author and Senior Lecturer for Creative Writing at Winchester University. Those ebooks are available to download from the Hampshire SLS Moodle.

The 2016 edition received twice as many registrations as the previous two put together, but unfortunately this translated into very few stories of an acceptable standard. It has been decided therefore, with great regret, that this year no winner can be declared and no prize awarded.

There were exceptions, of course; a small number of pupils had evidently expended time and trouble, and we thank those few for the considerable effort they made. We are sorry we will be unable to acknowledge their work. But it did not prove possible to assemble even ten good stories for the ebook, and we felt we could not reasonably ask our judge (who gave her time freely) nor the published author who would have provided the workshop to honour their commitment.

Hampshire SLS will review the remit and design of the competition over the summer and will decide whether or not to continue with this project next year.
