Schools may be interested in some free poetry workshops that are being offered by the National Trust/Heritage Lottery Fund as part of a project focused on Stanley Spencer and Sandham Memorial Chapel in Berkshire.

Spencer was an official war artist engaged during both 1st and 2nd World Wars, and his paintings at the purpose-built chapel in Sandham are composed around a centre piece called The Resurrection. This is a redemptive image depicting people and animals rising from the ground and reengaging in everyday occupation and well-suited as subject matter to stimulate responses about the use of familiar people and landscapes as a basis for the creation of artwork with a broader significance.

From a primary school perspective, workshops can be suitably tailored in a sensitive way, whilst older students may wish to consider further reaching implications of themes that Spencer engages with his work.
